Where the Ping comes from
By the time the river reaches Chiang Mai, its flood has already been decided upstream, in the mountains of Chiang Dao and the valleys of Mae Taeng and Mae Ngat, hours before the water touches the city. Understanding that journey is what turns a river gauge into a warning.
It begins in the hills, not the city
The Ping rises in the Chiang Dao highlands at the northern edge of Chiang Mai province, in the Daen Lao range near the Myanmar border, at around 1,700 metres. From there it runs south for some 650 kilometres, through Chiang Mai and Lamphun, on to Tak, and eventually into the Chao Phraya. But the stretch that matters for the city is the first hundred kilometres, where the mountain rain collects and heads downhill toward town.
The key thing to grasp: the water that floods Chiang Mai mostly did not fall on Chiang Mai. It fell in the hills to the north, sometimes while the city sky was clear.
The streams that feed it, above the city
As the Ping flows south toward town it is joined by its northern tributaries. The Mae Taeng comes in from the west and the Mae Ngat from the east, both upstream of the city. These are the flows that swell the river before it ever reaches Nawarat Bridge, and they are why the city's flood is really the sum of several valleys' rain, not one.
The Mae Ngat is also dammed; the Mae Ngat Somboon Chon reservoir sits on it, so the inflow from that side is partly managed rather than purely natural. That is a large part of why the raw reading at a mountain gauge does not map one-for-one onto the city's peak.
Down the Chiang Mai–Lamphun basin
Below its northern tributaries the Ping settles into the flat Chiang Mai–Lamphun basin and runs the length of the city. The gauge everyone watches, P.1 at Nawarat Bridge, sits here in the middle of town: it is the number the whole monitor is built around, because it is where the river meets the most people.
But by the time P.1 is rising, the flood has effectively already arrived. The city gauge tells you what is happening now, not what is coming. For that, you have to look upstream.
The tributary that joins downstream
One large tributary does not affect the city gauge: the Mae Kuang. It drains the hills east of town through Doi Saket and San Kamphaeng, but it flows away from the city toward Lamphun and only meets the Ping well to the south, near Pa Sang. Its own big reservoir, Mae Kuang Udom Thara, is nearly the size of Mae Ngat, but because it joins below Chiang Mai, its water never passes the city gauge. It is a reminder that upstream and downstream are what matter: which side of the city a river joins on decides whether it can flood you.
Why upstream is a clock you can read
The river is monitored by a chain of gauges, not just the one in town. High in the catchment, P.20 at Chiang Dao reads the mountain water first. Closer in, P.67 at Ban Mae Tae in San Sai reads the river just north of the city. Because water takes time to travel down the channel, each upstream gauge is a preview of the city gauge, a countdown.
Roughly, San Sai is six to eight hours upstream of Nawarat, and Chiang Dao is about eighteen. So a sharp rise at San Sai this evening is the city's morning; heavy rain at Chiang Dao today is water at your doorstep tomorrow. That travel time is not a stopwatch; it moves with how wet the ground already is, how hard it is raining, and how the dam is releasing. But it is a real, usable window, and it is exactly what the live gauges on this site are for.
A gauge can only see a flood coming by the time the water takes to travel, a matter of hours. To look a day or two ahead you have to watch the rain in the upstream catchment, not just the river. That is the job of the forecast; the gauges are the floor of the warning, not the ceiling.
Where it all goes
South of the city the Ping continues through Lamphun and on into Tak, where it is finally impounded by Bhumibol Dam, Thailand's tallest. From there it flows on to meet the Nan River at Nakhon Sawan, and the two together become the Chao Phraya that runs down to Bangkok. Bhumibol is enormous, but it sits hundreds of kilometres below Chiang Mai; it regulates the lower river, not the city's, which is why it has essentially no bearing on a Chiang Mai flood.
Reading the river from the top down
Put it together and the Ping stops being a line on a map and becomes a timeline you can read. Rain in Chiang Dao is roughly a day from your street; a rising San Sai gauge is six to eight hours of notice. The number at Nawarat is the headline, but the story is written upstream, and it is written early enough to act on, which is the whole reason to watch the gauges above the city, not just the one in it.
Where this comes from
The Ping's headwater peak is usually given as Doi Thuai in the Chiang Dao highlands, not the famous Doi Luang Chiang Dao massif nearby, which is a different mountain. Travel times are typical channel figures and vary with conditions. Gauge locations are cross-checked against the Royal Irrigation Department's upper-north network.
